Today I came across a article ( <a href="http://www.uxmag.com/strategy/share-the-sandbox">link</a>), I was very glad to read the article for the following reasons:<br /><ol><li>I have always been a advocate of the marriage between user experience and marketing. As author mentioned designers should try to not just solely concentrate on designs but also focus on how the designs have to be worked in order to meet marketing needs. </li><li>Although I enjoyed my grad school classes due it's interdisciplinary nature, I felt our exposure with marketing teams was non- existent. IUB having one of the best business schools of this nation ( <a href="http://kelley.iu.edu/">kelley business school</a>), can think of a course requiring business school students and HCI students working together. </li><li>Author indicates that UX could loose it's steam if UX designers and corporations don't educate the marketing and UX teams about the importance of working with each other. Some workshops in companies where both teams spend time on some dummy projects could be useful. This indication by author is also a reflection of one of the areas User Experience professionals should try to improve upon to get more visibility with upper management. </li></ol><div>Sometimes I read the comments and I found a model being used by a company based out of UK to fill the gap between designers and marketing teams. The model proposed by the company is named " Brand Touch Point Matrix" ( <a href="http://brandtouchpointmatrix.com/">link</a>). </div><div><br /></div><div>Dhanyavad ( Thank You).</div>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-62739588718909162192011-02-22T19:34:00.000-08:002011-02-22T19:35:28.406-08:00World landmarksMakes me feel so dizzy when I look at these pics, <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Corinne-Vionnet---Photo-Opportunities/ss/events/en/022211cvionnet#photoViewer=/ydownload/20110222/photos_net_web_en/1298397926">link</a>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-27910255709304419352011-02-17T16:10:00.000-08:002011-02-20T09:36:00.254-08:00Face YogaThis is funny and not real Yoga for sure. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WOI1Ce5L4A">link</a>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-47340467863566172232011-02-11T17:49:00.000-08:002011-02-20T09:38:35.054-08:00FDA approves apple devicesI don't think Android can get around this, considering their many hardware manufacturers. <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2011/feb/05/nation/la-na-fda-ipad-20110205">link</a>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-4889724954458963322011-02-09T20:24:00.000-08:002011-02-09T20:27:06.210-08:00Younger age group stroke victimsI agree with these numbers. <br />http://health.yahoo.net/news/s/ap/us_med_stroke_younger_victimsVarun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-34732669053157282272011-02-09T20:01:00.000-08:002011-02-09T20:03:06.759-08:00Weird beardThought of someone when I saw this. http://beardsofboulder.tumblr.com/Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-24703277145162892942011-02-08T19:33:00.001-08:002011-02-08T19:36:14.888-08:00Tired of Kayak, orbitz....... try thisFinally a online travel booking site with a unconventional UI. I was amazed by thinking and innovation by all the young children. Bear in mind they are some of them are just grade 1 students. Below are the pics of some of the innovations I found really interesting. Please click <a href="http://www.rediff.com/getahead/slide-show/slide-show-1-achievers-amazing-innovations-from-indian-school-children/20101119.htm">here</a> for the link to the complete article. Enjoy. Picture courtsey: Rediff.com. In the first picture which is Young Ananth from grade 1 in Tamil Nadu state in South India, describes his idea for shoes which can help to vacuum the floor automatically by sucking the dust. Someone has been observing mother as a user group and ideating from childhood :)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglnWvr-E7QSndKFrWXbEzMvpjSMlvxCHQgZgNcsQ-HCp4NmY4IOpWKAiJcOwwllLyFNKo7Qo-XlWPHtNqxdnUlDyVeA2huBOOvNBmTVuEpUerEE8nHA-KsDggaIV_jcbXDeOqqVvzwbj8J/s1600/19kids-tchrisananth.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 221px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglnWvr-E7QSndKFrWXbEzMvpjSMlvxCHQgZgNcsQ-HCp4NmY4IOpWKAiJcOwwllLyFNKo7Qo-XlWPHtNqxdnUlDyVeA2huBOOvNBmTVuEpUerEE8nHA-KsDggaIV_jcbXDeOqqVvzwbj8J/s320/19kids-tchrisananth.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542239707053120882" /></a><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><u><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></u></span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglnWvr-E7QSndKFrWXbEzMvpjSMlvxCHQgZgNcsQ-HCp4NmY4IOpWKAiJcOwwllLyFNKo7Qo-XlWPHtNqxdnUlDyVeA2huBOOvNBmTVuEpUerEE8nHA-KsDggaIV_jcbXDeOqqVvzwbj8J/s1600/19kids-tchrisananth.jpg"></a><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_qP_2WojncPEw-81-ZuqhshRspwUlu8wYbKYNVTi0LxWLC7e1G6Ahc6NiuR0GknLLvnl7lDrYfugxPUlsCG3VG4mUHsSKcQ2jzhGETsKGtxG_NWz86VaRNY6Yfx9OXOqmoedtNwH6h4EK/s1600/19kids-riyakothari.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 303px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_qP_2WojncPEw-81-ZuqhshRspwUlu8wYbKYNVTi0LxWLC7e1G6Ahc6NiuR0GknLLvnl7lDrYfugxPUlsCG3VG4mUHsSKcQ2jzhGETsKGtxG_NWz86VaRNY6Yfx9OXOqmoedtNwH6h4EK/s320/19kids-riyakothari.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542239648723017394" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9GulaWgz7MNlrEqy4YGsK5I5rMB_DRyhj-FYeYcvZixXp_kfFdfxUpm6h2RAjh1CAMcGpoACVkd9QmgJqUWazsKGS7OH0HPtXTnH3_fwhlouO72Ij_st6KBsf3S1On6Eg5QrsfgEwzRtU/s1600/19kids-ashunipatel.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9GulaWgz7MNlrEqy4YGsK5I5rMB_DRyhj-FYeYcvZixXp_kfFdfxUpm6h2RAjh1CAMcGpoACVkd9QmgJqUWazsKGS7OH0HPtXTnH3_fwhlouO72Ij_st6KBsf3S1On6Eg5QrsfgEwzRtU/s320/19kids-ashunipatel.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542240465407136594" /></a>Second picture is about grade 6 students from Vasant Valley School( my home town Delhi:)). A cycle which can help to clean roads with the help of two brooms attached to rear wheel of the cycle. As the person rotates the paddle the roads gets cleaned. I think this idea has evolved since Delhi state has big cleaning trucks which do a similar job but use power instead of manual labor. This is purely my understanding, the team may have to come to this idea without having thought/observed the trucks on the road. The last picture is from grade 10 students in Gujrat( a state in West India). It's basically a device to find misplaced objects, quite good observation skills. </div><div><br /></div><div>These students are not HCI masters or doctorate student. Most of them are still trying to figure out future direction for their life but their thirst of innovation is driven by strong observation skills and improvisation using available means. In terms of software industry we can equate improvisation to computer imaginative skills. Good job by every child who participated in this competition. </div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks for your time.</div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><u><br /></u></span></div><br /></div></div>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-16491059788694900092010-11-02T19:48:00.000-07:002010-11-02T21:43:47.871-07:008pen - New Android keyboard applicationDownloaded the first paid application on Android market today - <span style="font-weight:bold;">8pen</span>. I found the concept of re-inventing the keyboard on a mobile device quite interesting considering that's one thing that frustrates me about HTC incredible. My concern as a user is about the learning curve. From this video the learning curve would be a issue, some comments while downloading the app were also concerning learning curve. Interesting thing would be to observe how the user experience would be clashing with this form of innovation. Aspect of user experience in question how the user react to the learning curve associated with innovation. My friend <a href="http://raymatsil.clanteam.com/">Ray Matsil</a> posted this <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5678488/8pen-is-a-speedy-gesture+based-keyboard-for-android-phones?skyline=true&s=i">link </a>on his facebook since he uses facebook as a form of sharing innovative things online. One strategy could be to keep the words less.So here I am, I liked this presentation for the way the message is conveyed and it's association with everyday objects. <a href="http://slidesha.re/dAxDy9">link</a>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-41636205425977622432010-03-29T22:16:00.001-07:002010-03-29T22:25:30.418-07:00Reflection and Job huntHello ,<div><br /></div><div>Life is busy with job applications, capstone work and regular coursework at the end of the semester. So it must be something important I felt like sharing at 2 in the morning that I decided to write a blog post. Today I am going to talk about the importance of a concept which was taught to us by Marty while designing. This concept has helped me not only as a designer but also as a person( especially as a person looking for jobs :))<br /><br /></div><div>Reflections: The word itself means looking at our own actions in past and trying to improve upon it while we are progressing as a designer. For example in design we cannot expect any two projects to have the same outcome, in many aspects. These aspects could be satisfaction of the developers, product managers etc. but for us it's important to look back and see where we made a mistake and try to improve in future design's or projects. This concept was very useful in my present job hunt as I made it a point to have a post-interview analysis and this analysis has made me realize some of the mistakes I have made during the interview process. Importantly I have improved as a prospective candidate and I feel this improvement will be ever lasting even when I end up getting a job. I love this struggle of job search. There are hidden lessons for me as a person in this job hunt. I am planning to post some of the common interview questions I faced during all these interviews once I wind up my interviews probably by end of Spring as I believe it would be helpful for budding UX professionals to know what they can expect from Industry. </div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks and more verbose posts later. Good night.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> </div>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-41817664653837851882010-01-18T20:16:00.000-08:002010-01-18T20:37:01.827-08:00Zappos user experience + customer satisfaction= Zappos big hit?Hello,<div><br /></div><div>Finally after a long time I had the chance to blog. Not that I was short of topics to blog about but I was certainly short of time to Blog about those topics. I always struggle to see the dividing line between customer satisfaction and user experience. Here is a short personal experience which possibly helped me to understand the difference. </div><div><br /></div><div>Zappos is considered the amazon of shoes industry. It is know for it's great customer satisfaction and recently I guess it was <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124829443610573361.html">taken over by amazon</a> for a considerable amount of money. Anyways so I recently was in middle of my second chilly winter here in US and I had to get better shoes this time. I started searching online and found certain good deals but I had heard a lot about Zappos so I thought of spending some extra money and be satisfied that my money was in safe hands and that I would be treated well. Google rating's and customer feedbacks also helped me be double sure I was going in for the right place. Sorry I have to be very thoughtful about the money I spend since I am still looking for a job and finances are not a pretty picture. So I ordered these shoes from Zappos and it turns out that everything was awesome, on-time delivery and delivery was very well packed. The shoes gave my feet some warmth. So last point deserves a pause and I should say shoes gave me warmth initially. After some days I started feeling cold walking around with the shoes, one day I stared at my shoes and there were some cracks and just to remind everyone these shoes are still in their first month. Seeing those cracks I was very upset as despite having done the homework I think I failed and the shoes were no longer giving him a happy feeling which should have been the case with Zappos awesome customer satisfaction. Now I still haven't written to the company as I am literally running around looking for a job starting May and I think it's fine if my feet get cold sometime. Everyone has to struggle and I am fine with mine :). However I felt here was the case of a perfect customer satisfaction which has eventually failed due the bad quality of user experience related to my shoes. </div><div><br /></div><div>Now how could user experience have made my feet have felt better today, if there was a option on Zappos website which either said the shoes were fit for a particular range of temperature or in particular states which I feel Zappos can get the information from either the manufacturer of shoes i.e. Deer stag in my case or the end customers themselves. This option would have given me a assurance that the shoes I m buying is possibly fit for my place and temperature. I honestly feel this would be helpful as the shoe manufacturer would be aware some conditions in which the shoes would create problems like this. Even if it is not possible by shoe manufacturer this is certainly possible by Zappos asking their customer about their satisfaction with the quality of shoes and if there is a specific manufacturer they find a trend for not having a good quality of shoes they can certainly take up the issue with the shoe manufacturer. </div><div><br /></div><div>Am I being realistic or unrealistic? Not sure. I honestly feel online retail should go more on user experience. btw I recently liked the one click purchase option on amazon. It is sweetest thing in my life right now.</div><div><br /></div><div>Hopefully I get time to blog more in this crazy job hunt. </div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks for reading the post. <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span></div>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-28433904526818849482009-10-25T20:58:00.000-07:002009-10-25T21:43:10.967-07:00Talks and conferenceOur school and HCI faculty at IUB constantly keeps engaging us with industry in various forms. Erik Stolterman, Marty Siegel, Shaowen Bardzell, Jeff Bardzell, Eli Blevis keep updating about various industry developments related to HCI as well as some possible job/internship opportunities. As a part of these efforts Marty and Erik recently arranged for two talks. One was from Google and other from Adobe. Wow that sounds exciting. The individual representing Google was <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#6633FF;">David Krane</span> and the one representing Adobe was<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#6633FF;"> Brian Dils</span> ( a former IU HCI/D student). Some of the key learnings from Google talk was how Google takes quick decisions in a matter of minutes, David was not asked too many user experience related questions as he is not a interaction designer at Google. However Adobe talk was characterized by UX related questions and Brian gave us some important insights in order to be a better designer. Some of the key points were:<div><ol><li>If we work efficiently most of our work can be completed in less than the stipulated time, effective time management techniques were discussed when working as a interaction designer. </li><li>Fireworks as a effective tool was also discussed. Various prototyping tools like Photoshop, Illustrator were discussed, and emphasis was on Fireworks. Brian told about some of the places where Fireworks is most effective to use and some where it should not be used. </li><li>Design specifications as a important part of being designer were discussed. The book by Daniel M. Brown was suggested by Brian. The book is titled <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#6633FF;">Communicating Design Developing Web Site Documentation for Design and Planning.</span> I have started to use the book and it is important for designers to understand the proper specifications which have to be provided in order for most efficient working of the development teams. </li><li>Lastly Brian also spoke about the importance of programming for interaction designers. It is not expected for us to be hard-core computer science engineers but we are expected to know how things work and sometimes according to need we may also be required to code. So It's good to know some coding. </li></ol>Inspired by talk by Brian. I decided to Attend the two day<a href="http://bflex.info/"> Flex and Fusion conference</a> sponsored by Adobe at our campus in Bloomington. It was interesting conference, I attended beginner level workshop's for <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#6633FF;">Cold fusion and Flash catalys</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;">t</span>. Thanks Adobe for the sponsorship. It was exciting to learn new things. Will continue to hone these skills.<br /></div>Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-56581592633059406782009-10-25T06:31:00.000-07:002009-10-25T06:40:40.040-07:00Wizard of Oz prototypingOne of the other things which I am presently struggling with is<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizard_of_Oz_experiment"> Wizard of Oz prototyping</a>. I am supposed to use this for the project I am doing at my work. I have read research concerning the prototype. Please have a look at the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULfAwZAUUbs">SUEDE video</a> , SUEDE is one of the tools I found while researching for existing wizard of oz tools. However I am concerned about the part of the prototype wherein I am not supposed to be directly interacting and have to give the feeling to the user that he/she is in charge of the system. The technical parts are also somewhat a problem, I am trying to overcome it using some simple scripts using HTML. I was also thinking of using the existing chat system( suggested by my friend Moe) like YM, Gtalk, Skype or etherpad for making the system interactive. Lets see how it works. I am sure I can find a solution.:)Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-39664587223667715662009-10-25T06:15:00.000-07:002009-10-25T06:31:05.395-07:00Prototyping using foam core<div>The other thing which was done in the prototyping sessions by Dr Bardzell in these weeks. This one involved prototyping using foam core and cutting boards. Our team decided to make the prototype of Hand easy concept. Two features of the interface we decided to work upon one being the map and other being the book part of the interface. The images are self explanatory of the enjoyment I got out of cutting the foam boards to make it of the dimensions of our interface. Please look at the process and efforts of our class during the 1 hour 15 min session.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinWrzj6NPtQlPQ6j6gnvkD5I0x27JCMFS0hqDoV89VTFVQgCH7DPYAYmODy9Z8jBZ02cafjvCIxEPLg_9ua__ES8CFhPXLf3tzSjaE0T6u3QLrcBZzOTZeLfwJ3fRpA86KZsZHqiyQFzVu/s1600-h/CIMG2315.JPG"><img style="display:block; The first one we worked on was rapid prototyping. Prof Bardzell asked us to make prototypes during her class in 30 min using common office supplies. It was exciting to see that despite not having played with such office items for such purpose how much I wanted to continue to work after the class as well. One of the observation was how the entire process of product development is unfolding. In these 30 min I started with sketching of the concept, which was Hand easy concept( one from Xiying). Then I started to put myself in the shoes of the end user and started classifying information according to users perception and then in last 20 minutes of the work started doing the prototyping work. It was pleasure to get my hands on the scissors and make these cute looking buttons and other fun work which was done during those 30 minutes.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoZPylTs39wuDykAWZ3piCSRYpt_zyv2XqjsZY__039LlTmn8y775v_KBdHimgp_1Og_3nj5E9q_qZwXhufwkAPlgBwA88Mn9p8imrTVNFwm5_iFvJfvoNOTELyQ69cxtfH8LqusrzHxho/s1600-h/IMG_0917.jpg"><img style="display:block; Really liked how Tim brown explains the role played by HCI and design thinking in effectively reducing the cost of a technology costing very much in Western world.Varun Khandujahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16206290333189126262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1309564546861797489.post-10499667633652002352009-10-02T17:11:00.000-07:002009-10-02T17:26:56.224-07:00Affinity diagramThis post may not look like the first post but essentially I thought of starting my work and not delay my entry to the world of blogging any further. Firstly I have to say I love my team. My team for HCI methods taught by Dr Shaowen Bardzell constitutes Xiying, Robert and Matt. Today was a rather odd day in our team. Our meeting started at around noon time and we thought our team which has been so wonderful so far would wind up and emerge with another A ( I know marty says grades are not important but still A is A :)). However we struggled as a group for the first time. Sometimes we look at the data and say it was the data which was too obscure and broad for us. Essentially the classification is becoming a problem for the group. We are getting too deep in psychology to understand what the user is doing with regard to our contextual enquiry and ethnographic observation. I will post a blog about both the ethnographic and contextual enquiry later but essentially we have to see how to use this affinity diagram to narrow the scope of our work. The team was very excited this week to have a good grade for the focus group but affinity diagram is testing the patience of our group. Well there is a meeting tomorrow at 9 in the morning. Lets see if we get something meaningful out of this work. In the mean time please read <a href="http://reflectivedesign.wordpress.com/">Marty's blog</a> if possible. I will upload some pictures would be uploaded tomorrow and more details about the project and some previous work which followed this project will continue.
